Student Summer Job & Employment Opportunities

Time To Get Started On Your Student Summer Job Hunt

If you're hoping to earn some extra money this summer, now is the time that you should be looking to secure yourself a summer job, because unlike many potential applicants, employers do not like to wait until the last minute. Most summer jobs are taken by the time that students are out of school, and the best jobs are taken by the people who have done all of their preparation well in advance.

Start Your Summer Job Hunt Now!

Don't wait until graduation to start working on your resume and sending out your applications. Take some time this Spring to prepare and complete your job resume by adding your job experience and qualifications and developing a professional looking cover letter that outlines your skills, expectations, and employment variables. The students who get this done ahead of everyone else are going to get the first shot at potential temporary summer employment, because businesses are looking for smart, reliable students who are organized, prepared, and are willing to take the time to get themselves ready for summer.

Resumes

Just remember that your resume should contain "relevant" information that connects you to the potential employer. Employers want to know what skills you have, what education you hold, and what experience you've gained. They are looking to fulfill needs in their businesses, and most employers are not willing to invest a lot of money and resources training people for jobs that will only last a couple of months. Instead they will look for students who have some necessary skills or abilities to fill immediate needs. So when you are building your resume, put in the stuff that counts--the stuff that will make you more attractive to employers than the other students and applicants. Leave out any irrelevant information such as hobbies and interests. If an employer wants to know what you do in your spare time, they'll ask. Otherwise they want to know what you can do for them!

Apply Now; Don't Delay

No, it's not summer yet, but everyone is getting prepared for the season. So you shouldn't be waiting to apply at the very last moment, because you'll have fewer opportunities, and fewer jobs that will meet your requirements. Check online resources, check with your student career centre, check local papers and other publications, and don't hesitate to submit to companies and businesses that you feel would be a good match for your summer employment. Not all businesses will be inviting applications, so please be polite when applying for employment. Don't be rude, and don't be too aggressive, because employers have their own businesses to run, and don't necessarily have the time to spend on students just looking for summer spending money.

A Job Well Done

When you plan your student summer job hunt, and hopefully you're doing that right now, keep in mind that your summer job doesn't have to match your career expectations. Job experience is valuable in almost any context, and whether you decide to go into the industry that you work for in the summer, it doesn't have to be a related business in order for you to apply and be accepted. Most people are looking to earn money to pay bills, have some disposable income for the summer, or help pay tuition for the next semester, so it isn't necessary to gain summer experience in the field in which you expect to spend your lifetime. Find the summer job that's right for you, right for the employer, and will look good on your resume as well as provide you with a satisfying experience and a reasonable income.

Good luck finding the right student summer job this year!
